Home Music Composition
Kim has a particular interest for writing pieces for a larger group of instruments. His music is generally very dense and hectic and his approach to writing music is very orchestral and colourful.

The dense scoring of his works, where fragments, threads of theme seem to emerge, then Notes1vanish, re-emrging later, but transformed, then vanish again. The music, containing many of these tiny thematic elements, constantly twists, turns and evolves creating complex aural patterns rather then conventionally structured music..."

Due to his colourful writing and orchestration his music has on more than one occasion been labelled with having cinematographic qualities.

His music trips over itself, deranges and proceeds like a tidal wave. His recent works tend to incorporate other art disciplines either by collaborating with other artists, or by engaging theatrical or visual elements. Simultaneously he has been adding self designed instruments to the standard ones.

How one writes music is always difficult to explain. There are various analogies though that might just open the door a bit and provide a bit of a view into the 'kitchen' of the composer.

The actor analogy:
As an actor who prepares for her or his role in the next film, and gathers information about the character to play... tries to identify with the personality of this character... tries to become this character, the composer gathers musical material... phrases, melody lines, musical gestures and attitudes that have to live under the one roof of his or her new composition. The composer tries to identify and direct all the material he or she gathers to the character of the piece that slowly emerges to a clear identity.

Notes2The taste analogy:
Try to imagine a taste analogy to what a composer audibly tries to imagine when he or she is working on a new piece. You are in a restaurant and you have ordered from the menu Fettuccine with prawns, spring onions, lemon grass, coriander and chilli. While you looked at the menu and finally made your choice, your taste senses have been at work in trying to imagine the taste of all the ingredients separate and combined into one dish. That is a bit how the composer tries to imagine the sound ingredients and characteristics he or she has gathered for the new composition.

Kim has decided not to apply for grants, government nor private, since 2005. He has decided to be free of funding and to not join the rat race for grant applications since he does not want to compromise to any deadline, style, standard, trend, practice or fashion and maintain freedom of managing his working hours and working discipline. He deals directly with the performers and funds his own writing.
